The ED Charge Nurse is responsible for patient care in the emergency room and assists with Acute Care/Swing beds. This position is designated as the charge nurse for acute care and swing beds, and is responsible for the Long-Term care and Assisted Living if needed for emergency situations.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Follows the role of charge nurse and the responsibilities with staff as well as residents/patients according to policies and procedures of the facility.
2. Acts as a team member and assists with all direct patient care. This may include answering lights, baths, vital signs, etc. as time and census allows.
3. Triages all patients within 15 minutes of arrival.
4. Maintains optimal physiological function of all patients.
a. Performs patient assessment on all ED patients, according to complaint.
b. Ensures charting is appropriate, timely and complete on all patients.
c. Performs basic and advanced nursing procedures as dictated by physician’s orders and patient assessments.
d. Gives report to floor RN for an admission and calls report to transferring hospitals.
e. Demonstrates performance of all emergency equipment including but not limited to: EKG machine, ventilator, defibrillator, vein finder, and IV pumps.
f. Acts as a liason to all nursing units during emergencies and when questions arise.
5. Reports to the medical provider, as needed, when new problems develop with individual patients.
a. Appropriate and complete documentation for all ED patients including but not limited to triage notes, ED procedures, medication administration transfers, and death documentation.
6. Completes and forwards, in a timely manner, a Quality Management Memo to Nursing Administration when incidents involving visitors, patients, or staff occur. Notifies family and physician of all incidents.
7. Ensures Incident Reports are completed and forwarded to the Employee Health/Infection Control Nurse.
8. Ensures that patient rights are honored by all under his/her supervision. Examples: free from abuse, physical or mental, and treated with dignity and respect.
9. Assists in completion of administrative forms and reports. Examples, but not all inclusive are:
a. Performance evaluations of staff.
b. Updating policies and procedures.
10. Gives verbal report for oncoming shift.
11. Specific shift assignments:
7 am – 7 pm
a. Checks crash carts and documents on log daily.
b. Ensures IV caddy is stocked with needed supplies.
7pm – 7 am
a. Completes Glucometer Q.C.
b. Monthly complete inventory of crash cart.
c. Ensures ED rooms are stocked.
d. Ensures IV caddy is stocked with needed supplies.
12. Keeps all certifications (ACLS, PALS, TNCC) current.
13. Demonstrates knowledge of infection control standards and adheres to the guidelines for handwashing, standard precautions, and bloodborne pathogens as required by DOSH.
14. Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times as observed by peers and management.
15. Demonstrates awareness of safe work habits and maintains a safe working environment by adhering to department and hospital policies, including but not limited to, zero lift, SDS, body mechanics and ergonomics.
16. Demonstrates compliance to all Human Resources policies, including but not limited to, attendance, dress code, smoking, and name badges.
17. Attends department meetings and participates in mandatory education.
18. Conducts self in a professional manner and is pleasant, respectful, and courteous in all interactions with patients, families, staff, and other visitors to the hospital.
19. Promotes effective working relationships and works cohesively with employees both within and outside of the department.
20. Understands and demonstrates the mandatory reporting process for abuse or neglect as required by the Department of Social and Health Services and Department of Health.
Must hold a Washington State license and have completed an approved Registered Nurse program.
Must have ACLS certification within 3 months of hire date, PALS certification within 6 months of hire date, and TNCC certification within 6 months of hire date. Must have current CPR certification. Previous experience in the emergency department, knowledge of cardiac, medical, and geriatric care is essential. Previous experience in a supervisory/charge role is preferred, but not required. Basic computer skills are required. Must be able to make independent decisions, and recognize limitations and the need for additional knowledge or assistance. Must be able to work flexible hours and cover call, if needed. Must be able to speak, read, write, and follow oral/written instructions in English.
