Kids and pain relievers: How much?

You never want to give a child too much medicine. That's why it's essential to read the product's label.

Acetaminophen:

Liquid (160 mg/5 mL). Dosage by weight.

  • 6-11 – 1.25 mL.
  • 12-17 – 2.5 mL.
  • 18-23 – 3.75 mL.
  • 24-35 – 5 mL.
  • 36-47 – 7.5 mL.
  • 48-59 – 10 mL.
  • 60-71 – 12.5 mL.
  • 72-95 – 15 mL.
  • 96+ – 20 mL.

Chewable (80 mg). Dosage by weight.

  • 6-11 pounds – Don't use.
  • 12-17 pounds – Don't use.
  • 18-23 pounds – 1.5 tablets.
  • 24-35 pounds – 2 tablets.
  • 36-47 pounds – 3 tablets.
  • 48-59 pounds – 4 tablets.
  • 60-71 pounds – 5 tablets.
  • 72-95 pounds – 6 tablets.
  • 96+ pounds – 8 tablets.

Chewable (160 mg). Dosage by weight.

  • 6-11 pounds – Don't use.

  • 48-59 pounds – 1 tablet.
  • 60-71 pounds – 1 tablet.

  • 96+ pounds – 2 tablets.

Adult tablets (500 mg). Dosage by weight.

  • 6-11 pounds – Don't use.
  • 12-17 pounds – Don't use.
  • 18-23 pounds – Don't use.
  • 24-35 pounds – Don't use.
  • 36-47 pounds – Don't use.
  • 48-59 pounds – Don't use.
  • 60-71 pounds – Don't use.
  • 72-95 pounds – 1 tablet.
  • 96+ pounds – 1 tablet.

Warnings!

Don't give a child acetaminophen AND over-the-counter cough or cold medicines unless advised by your doctor.

Don't give acetaminophen to a child younger than 12 weeks unless advised by your doctor.

When giving liquid, use the measuring device that came with the product, of possible. (Your pharmacy should carry these as well.)

Read the label for dosage timing.

Ibuprofen:

Infant drops (50 mg/1.25 mL). Dosage by weight.

  • 6-11 pounds – Don't use.
  • 12-17 pounds – 1.25 mL.
  • 18-23 pounds – 1.875 mL.
  • 24-35 pounds – 2.5 mL.
  • 36-47 pounds – 3.75 mL.
  • 48-59 pounds – 5 mL.
  • 60-71 pounds – Don't use.
  • 72-95 pounds – Don't use.
  • 96+ pounds – Don't use.

Liquid (100 mg/5 mL). Dosage by weight.

  • 6-11 pounds – Don't use.
  • 12-17 pounds – 2.5 mL.

  • 24-35 pounds – 5 mL.

Don't give ibuprofen to a child younger than 6 months.

When giving liquid, use the measuring device that came with the product, if possible. (Your pharmacy should carry these as well.)

Read the label for dosage and timing.
